Cabbage Butterfly

What I like:
The balance of the image. I like how the bud recapitulates the color and position of the butterfly.

What I don't like:
The image appears almost two-dimensional -- quite flat. I used fill flash and perhaps this has obliterated the texture that gives objects their dimensionality. Background is BORING! Looks almost like poster board. Would selective dodging and burning help?

  1. What I LIKE about it is the flatness . Reminiscent of Japanese prints compositionally. I might -- might -- look at cropping it every so slightly more tightly, to increase the tension at the edges.

  2. Michael --

I do love your composition. The softness of the pink with the green is very peaceful. What I believe it needs is some rear lighting to make the subject separate from the background and pop. I wouldn't crop it at all.

  3. Thanks to you both for your comments.

Interesting comment about Japanese prints--I am very flattered. Two of my first and most significant influences, compositionally, were Hiroshige and Hokusai.

As far as cropping is concerned, my concern was that I had cropped TOO tightly...

I had not thought of backlighting--that certainly would have separated the butterfly from the background. And easy to do with the Nikon R1C1
